Adopt Me: Best Friends Animal Sanctuary

Beth — Wed, 04 Aug 2021 15:31:57 +0000

A few years ago, I had the opportunity to visit Best Friends Animal Sanctuary in Kanab, Utah. It was amazing! I’ve picked a few dogs to share with you in the hopes that you’ll help them find a forever home. All photos and descriptions from the dogs are from Best Friends Animal Sanctuary.

Meet Sasha the Sunbear ! This sweet lady loves going for car rides, taking a nice stroll, or lounging in the shade. Sasha is an introvert and can be shy around new people, but she gets so excited when she sees her friends that she sings. This beautiful girl loves the great outdoors so much that she took herself on adventures in the past. Because of this, she needs super-secure housing with ideally a nice big yard. Sasha is a single lady and would prefer to be your only pet as she is most confident when it is just her and her people. If you have fallen in love with this striking lady, then ask us about Sasha today!

Barley is an outgoing little fluff ball who loves to go on adventures. His short little legs and his age have never held him back! He’s always up for romping around, rolling on his back, and simply having a grand ol’ time. Barley enjoys the company of his people friends and does very well after some relationship building. He would need his potential new family to come to meet him at Dogtown to make sure it is a good fit. A couple of his all-time favorite things to do are playing fetch with a rotation of squeaky toys and get pets when he’s comfortable and ready.

Domineo has a lot of personality for such a little guy! He is a spirited, energetic, and somewhat independent fellow. He is very smart and is a quick learner. Domineo is eager to work and learn new things – especially if there’s a treat reward involved. He enjoys long walks, showing off his skills on the agility course, following his nose to find new scents, and playing with his favorite Jolly Ball. He can be very affectionate once he’s built some trust. If you’re ready to welcome this fun-loving guy into your home, he would love to meet you too!

Whistler is an exceptional guy looking for a very special home. He is a typical hound when it comes to sniffing and baying. He loves to use his nose and then tell everyone about it! Whistler is thought to have a cerebellar disease which basically means he is missing part of his brain; because of this, he often shows some repetitive behaviors.

Whistler has done great at the sanctuary with a structured routine and relationship building with his caregivers. He can be a sensitive boy, and things like loud noises, stormy weather, and constant change can throw him off. Whistler lives with other dogs but prefers to coexist as opposed to constantly play. He really enjoys canine company. He knows how to use his dog door, and it may help in a new home to have a similar set-up to help him with routine.
Whistler loves walks and cookies and is a good learner with some patience (and cookies). He is also very affectionate and sweet once he knows and trusts you. He loves to bury his soft fur under your arm or weave between your legs for affection. If you’re interested in meeting Whistler, we ask that you spend some time with him at the sanctuary to make sure it’s a good fit. Whistler is a caregiver favorite, and his friends would like nothing more than to see him happy in his perfect home.

Strawberry is as sweet as her name! She is friendly and affectionate with everyone, although her exuberance for life may make her a better fit in a home without small children or anyone unsteady on their feet. Strawberry would make a great exercise buddy. Her idea of a perfect day would be to start off with a food puzzle, followed by a hike or maybe an agility lesson or splash in the kiddie pool, time to romp around in a backyard, then a training session or nosework for her dinner, and a cuddle session to finish her day.

This smarty-pants aced her C.L.A.S.S. training program, so she holds attention, has leash up manners, waits at the door, comes when called, abides by loose leash walking, offers a polite greeting, waits for the food bowl, and knows ‘leave it,’ ‘stay,’ ‘give’ and ‘take’ (trades valuable objects), in addition to two tricks! She has a history of ear infections, so she experiences sensitivity around her head and ears, but that doesn’t prevent her from being a loving cuddle bug. Adopt Strawberry, and she’ll help you meet all your fitness goals!

Ricardo is an energetic and goofy dog who would love to join you on your next adventure! He takes a minute to warm up to new people, but once you’re his person, he never wants to leave your side. He loves swimming and playing frisbee and is always up for a good hike. Although he is a senior dog, don’t let that grey face fool you – Ricardo has the energy and enthusiasm of a puppy and would love a chance to show you his playful side.
If you think Ricardo could be a good fit for you, contact Best Friends for more information.

Cordelia can be a really sweet, silly girl. But people only see this side of her when she’s in her comfort zone beside her best dog buddy. He helps give her a lot of confidence, and she is more willing to try new things if he’s with her. Cordelia was born in 2012. She is really smart and excels at training – especially when food is involved. She’s become a rock star at agility at the Sanctuary. Because Cordelia is a very shy dog, she can be shut down and extremely nervous when out of her comfort zone. She doesn’t like being touched by people and probably never will be comfortable with that. Cordelia would do best in a relaxed, structured home with a very patient person or family who understands her personality and accepts her for who she is. A home without many visitors would be best. When there are visitors, she would be most comfortable staying in a quiet room so she won’t be forced to socialize. She’ll also need a confident dog buddy who will be a good role model for her.

Caliente is originally from Puerto Rico. He is a fun and energetic dog who loves walks and hikes; he’s always up for an adventure. Cali rides nicely in the car, and he’s crate trained, too. He learns fast and loves training; he knows “sit and “down” and is an absolute star at agility training. Other favorites include solving food puzzles and frozen Kongs, as well as snuggling up on his bed with a collection of toys. Caliente absolutely loves toys and playing fetch! He also really enjoys the company of other little dogs and enjoys playing and going on walks with his friends. He does need an adult-only home. He needs a while to warm up to new human friends, especially men, but once he does, he can be very friendly and cuddly. He would do best with an experienced adopter who will be patient with him and give him time to feel safe and comfortable.

Safira looks to be a Border Collie mix. Treats and baby talk are the way to this girl’s heart. Safira can be a bit shy and fearful with people she doesn’t know, but with a little time and patience, she will give her trust. And, once she trusts people, she loves them.
Born in 2011, Safira is an active, playful girl. She loves toys, especially tennis balls and her big Jolly ball. Fetch, and swimming are two of her favorite things. Safira has overcome her fear of cars and enjoys golf cart rides around the Sanctuary. She eats a prescription diet and prefers male dogs to other females. She’d love a home with someone who will take the time to get to know her and who will enjoy her playful, silly side.

Tacoma is a young dog, but when we call ‘Puppy puppy puppy,’ he comes running. Tacoma is very shy and does take time to warm up to people. He currently does not allow human touch. He gets his confidence being around other dogs and enjoys playing with them. The way to earn Tacoma’s trust is treats, dog friends, and high-pitched baby talk. Tacoma is learning how to be a dog and the skills needed to thrive in life while at Dogtown. He is looking for a home that can give him lots of time, love, patience, and treats while he settles in.

If you are interested in adopting any of these dogs, fill out an adoption application with Best Friends Animal Sanctuary. If now isn’t the time to add a dog to your life, I hope you’ll share these dogs!

In addition to dogs, you can also adopt cats. birds, rabbits, pigs, goats, and horses from the Sanctuary. If you can’t make it out to the Sanctuary, Best Friends Animal Society also partners with rescue organizations all over the country.

Adopt Me: Nadia the Husky Mix | Warrior Dog Rescue

Beth — Thu, 09 Apr 2020 15:29:16 +0000

As crazy as 2020 is, this might be the perfect time to adopt or foster a dog. One of the advantages of working remotely is more time to help a new pup adjust to a new living situation. Studies have shown that people with pets are generally happier and healthier than their petless counterparts. Kelly from K Schulz Photography uses her talent to help showcase homeless pets find their forever homes. Nadia, the Husky mix, is currently available for adoption from Warrior Dog Rescue in Minneapolis/St. Paul area. She is approximately two years old and is housetrained. Although Nadia is not good with other dogs, she is good with cats.

From Kelly: “Nadia here is a beautiful, intelligent, rambunctious girl. She came to Warrior Dog rescue and was adopted by her foster. Unfortunately, life happens, and although broken-hearted, that foster had to return her.

Nadia is a strong girl with her fair share of rescue dog challenges, but to a special family out there, she’ll be the perfect addition.

She’s a smiley girl, and you’ll fall in love with her face in seconds. I know I saw those blue eyes and melted when I met her. She’s been in rescue for quite some time now and needs that special family to give her a loving home.”

From Nadia. “My eyes draw everyone to me, and people stop me to tell me. However, that’s only the start of my awesomeness. I am very athletic and would love to run with you if you’d take me. My walks are a bit rough, but with an experienced handler, I’d be perfect. So far, squirrels and rabbits are my focus, but I HAVE walked by critters and dogs successfully without notice, so I’m close to being the perfect girl. I need to be an only dog.

Hanging out in my crate is something I am a pro at. I don’t bark and happily go in when its time because I know a yummy treat is awaiting me. In fact, I barely bark at all, only when it is absolutely necessary. I quiet down right away when asked to. I’m such a good girl! Snuggling is pretty great! I really love my humans give them lots of love and affection.”

Nadia is available through Warrior Dog Rescue, a foster-based rescue located in the twin cities of Minnesota. If you aren’t looking to add a new family member to your life, please share an adoptable pet today. You can sponsor Nadia or another pet at Warrior Dog Rescue.

Adopt Me: Animal Welfare Dahab in Sinai, Egypt

Beth — Tue, 15 Oct 2019 16:11:55 +0000

I am always happy to share dogs who are looking for forever homes. October is Adopt A Shelter Dog Month, and these three lovely dogs are looking for forever homes. They are currently at Animal Welfare Dahab in Sinai, Egypt.

From Nusa: “Greetings from Dahab, Sinai, Egypt. Our supporter Helena Woods sent us your link, and we would love to see some of our rescue girls featured on your site. We are a small animal welfare NGO (nonprofit) located in Dahab. We are focused on TNR, emergency help, raising awareness, and education and of course – adoption promotion for our rescues.

Heidi is one year and four months old. Although Heidi suffered abuse before being rescued, she is super friendly and affectionate. Heidi is ready to shower you with kisses (big time!). Heidi swims like an otter and loves to run and chase windblown items and birds.

Heidi is spayed and up to date on all vaccinations, and her paperwork is completed. She is ready to travel!

Misty was found at four months of age in a rural area, and she was afraid of everything. Now, at one year old, she is strong and confident, but very friendly.

Misty is a super athlete who can run chasing birds endlessly without tiring. She would love to have large open areas to run.
Misty is sterilized. Additionally, all vaccinations and paperwork are complete. Misty is ready to travel!

Binty is currently around eight months old. She was found in the hands of kids at a very young age, together with her siblings.

Binty is a lovely, sweet-tempered girl. She is not an alpha dog.
Still water runs deep – Binty can make great balance and harmony in a group of various dogs in a silent way. She is a highly intuitive dog.

Adopt Me: Best Friends Animal Sanctuary

Beth — Thu, 31 Jan 2019 18:57:37 +0000

The Year of the Dog is rapidly winding down, but these dogs are still hoping for a home! This time of year is a great time to adopt a dog or other animal. Best Friends Animal Sanctuary has over 200 dogs waiting for their forever homes, here are just a few. All photos are courtesy of Best Friends. Martha is a lovely brindle Shepherd mix. She is new to Best Friends, please email adoptions@bestfriends.org to learn more about her. Marshall walks nicely on a leash, loves stuffed toys, and gets along well with other dogs.

BamBam is a sweet Labrador mix who loves people. She can be choosy when it comes to dog companions. Chinook is a handsome senior Lab mix who likes people and other dogs, but can’t live with cats.

Cleveland is a Boxer mix who is very shy. He will need a home with a gentle, patient person and would do best with a friendly role model dog. Raquel has lots of energy and loves to play. Although Raquel loves to interact with humans, she’s also content to amuse herself.

Hamlin was born in November 2018. He is a Red Heeler Mix. Puppies tend to be adopted very quickly, so if you’re interested in Hamlin or one of his litter mates, apply right away! Phineas is a senior Chihuahua mix.

And since it almost the Year Of The Pig, I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention that Best Friends Animal Sanctuary also has pigs! (As well as cats, birds, rabbits, horses, and farm animals.)

Lucille is a Vietnamese Pot Bellied Pig who is about five years old. She responds to clicker training and loves belly rubs. Diesel is also a Vietnamese Pot Bellied Pig. He enjoys mud baths and going for walks. Before bring home a pig, please be sure your local zoning board allows pigs. Even “micro pigs” are not permitted in many towns and cities, which is why so many of them end up needing to find a new place to live.

A few years ago I was fortunate enough to visit Best Friends Animal Sanctuary in Kanab, Utah. It is incredible, and if you are an animal lover, I hope you’ll get to experience it for yourself!

Best Friends is currently offering the following adoption promotions:

Free:

Adopt any dog or cat who is a senior, has special needs or is a single pet (can be the only pet in the home), and your adoption fee will be waived.

Hometown Heroes:

Veterans, active military and their families can adopt any dog or cat for free.

Seniors for Seniors:

Individuals 60 years or older can adopt a dog or cat eight years or older for free.

If you are looking for the perfect gift for an animal lover, consider sponsoring a pet or donating in your loved one’s name.

Adopt Me: Rutherford County PAWS

Beth — Wed, 31 Oct 2018 01:36:15 +0000

PAWS in Rutherford County Tennessee is celebrating National Pit Bull Awareness Month with $10 adoption fees for all pitties during October! Nashville pet photographer, Mandy Whitley, volunteers her time and talent with several rescues including PAWS.

From Mandy: “I’ve been working with Rutherford County PAWS for many months photographing their adoptable cats and dogs. I’m sure most of these dogs have already been adopted, as the shelter has a very fast adoption rate, but there are always more out there. Most of these dogs were just precious, happy guys and gals and a few are even from the Carolina storms.”

When you scroll through these photos, you’ll notice that all the dogs are super cute, but there is a wide variation in appearance. The reasons for this are plenty. First of all, most or all of them are mixed breeds. Secondly, it is common for people to label any dog with a blocky head a Pit bull or Pit bull mix. To make matters more complicated, the Pit bull is not a recognized breed by the AKC, and some people say that Pit bull isn’t a breed at all.

Over the years, Pit bulls have received a lot of negative press. However, Pit bulls are not inherently dangerous, nor do they have locking jaws. One of my favorite blogs, Sarcastic Dog, has some great posts about dispelling Pitbull myths.

I checked the PAWS website, and only Trudy is still available for adoption. She is around two years old. However, if you’re interested in adopting a Pittie mix, there’s a good chance that your local shelter has some!

About Mandy Whitley Photography: Based in Nashville, Tennesee, Mandy specializes in pet photography. I’m happy to share the news that Mandy just had a baby boy! We wish their family the best!
