Although Theo may have spent his early life as a city dog, he loves small-town life!  It is easy to walk down the street to visit my sister and her dogs.   We have a big fenced-in yard that he tries to keep squirrel-free (without much success.)  Additionally, we have some woods and other areas that have plenty of wildlife, including deer, birds, foxes, possums, raccoons, rabbits, toads, and frogs.  There is always something interesting outside.

One of his favorite things is going for a ride in our ’51 Chevy pickup.   Theo never has to go to the V*E*T in it.  If I ask Theo, “Do you want to go for a ride?” he makes a beeline for the truck.  Of course, he rides in the front and wears a safety harness in case of an accident. (NEVER LET YOUR DOG RIDE IN THE BACK OF A PICKUP!)

Occasionally, we’ll take Theo to the grocery store, and one of us will wait with him, while the other runs in to get a few groceries. Theo loves  Supreme Source® Grain Free dog food, and it is available in grocery stores as well as online.

One of the benefits of cooking for Thanksgiving is the leftovers.   I never tried cranberry sauce until a few years ago.  My parents always bought a small can of it every Thanksgiving.  However,  none of my sisters or I ever touched it.  A few years ago, my sister, Alice, introduced us to fresh cranberry sauce.  I was pleasantly surprised at how good it is.

Just as importantly for me, homemade cranberry sauce is easy to make!  It only takes about 15 minutes to cook, but allow about 2 hours for it to cool.

Orange Cranberry Sauce

Delicious and easy orange cranberry sauce

Prep Time 5 minutes minutes

Cook Time 15 minutes minutes

Cooling time 2 hours hours

Servings 2 cups

Ingredients

• 3/4 cup granulated sugar
• 3/4 cup water
• 1/4 cup freshly squeezed orange juice
• 1 tsp orange zest
• 12 oz fresh cranberries

Instructions

• Heat water, orange juice, and sugar to boiling
• Add orange zest and cranberries
• Simmer for ~ 15 minutes, stirring occasionally
• Allow cranberry sauce to cool
• Cover and refrigerate until serving time

We use fresh cranberries, but frozen will work as well.  We also use vegan sugar.  If you prefer sweeter cranberry sauce, add a little more sugar. If you prefer a smoother cranberry sauce, you can mash the cranberries with a potato masher either before or after cooking.

Consider doubling the recipe so you’ll have enough cranberry sauce for Thanksgiving and to make Crantastic Crostini! It is the perfect post-Thanksgiving snack!

Crantastic Crostini

Prep Time 5 minutes minutes

Toasting Baguette (optional) 9 minutes minutes

Ingredients

• baguette (toasted)
• cream cheese
• homemade orange cranberry sauce

Instructions

• Toast baguette slices if needed. (Preheat oven to 400, slice baguette and toast for 8-10 minutes.)
• Spread cream cheese on cooled baguette slices.
• Top with cranberry sauce.
• Enjoy!

We like Daiya cream cheese.

No matter how long my to-do list is, things are more enjoyable with fun office accessories.  My Doxie d-clips always make me smile.

I probably squealed when I found these Bulldog pushpins.

Plants are great for removing toxins in the air and giving me a mental boost.  If you have pets, be sure all plants are either pet-friendly or out of reach!  My dogs are short, so anything on my desk is out of their reach.

Like many of you, I always need the right pen for the job.  My sisters know this, and they fully support me. I have all kinds of markers, colored pencils, and pens. Check out these awesome pencil bags they gave me!

Soy candles from Wear Wag Repeat are great whether you are living with dogs or not.  They smell great and are safe around dogs.  Puppy Breath actually neutralizes odors.

If you are lucky enough to have dogs for office mates, you’ll need to make sure their needs are met. Theo and Nelly are always in the same room as I am, while Sophie is a little more independent.

Theo is a cuddler and would often spend time in my lap, which is wonderful, but it makes it harder to type, as he likes to rest his head on my left arm.  Since I bought his new bed, he hangs out there while I’m working. (And I can type a lot faster with two hands instead of one, which gives us more time to play.)

He loves plush toys (and so do I), so he has a pretty big collection. I try to rotate his toys so he always has something to play with that he hasn’t seen in a while.  We both love his giraffe.

Staying hydrated is important for people as well as dogs, so I always make sure they have access to water.  A white carpet might seem like a questionable choice for a house with dogs, but since two of my dogs are white, and Theo’s hair magically turns white when he sheds, it is actually a great color for us!

My favorite gift to give kids is a stuffed animal.  They are cute, cuddly, and most importantly, I think they encourage creative play.  It broke my heart a little each time one of my kids outgrew their stuffed animals.

However, when we adopted Theo, I was delighted to discover that he loves stuffed toys.

Theo is the king of plush toys.  If he loves one, he carries around from room to room and gently chews on it.  Or else he tears into like it is screaming personal insults at him.  Theo is a master at destuffing toys and destroying the squeakers.   It used to cause me some mental anguish when Theo destroyed one, but I know that he is having fun.   I always look for ones that are well-made with safe materials, and of course, they have to be cute.

When I saw the ZippyPaws Storybook Fiesta Line on Amazon, I wanted all the toys. And I hoped that Theo would love them as well. They are adorable and made with high-quality materials and care.

Theo must have thought it was his birthday; he never gets more than one new toy at a time!

Since I’m also a plant lover, I needed Carmen the Cactus.  She is so cute that I bought two.  I figured it was safest to let Theo test her first since I had a backup. Theo grabbed Carmen and ran all over the room with her in a state of frenzied excitement.  After a few minutes of zooming around, he started to chew on her, testing out her squeaker and stitching.  The squeaker is exclusive to ZippyPaws.   Their engineers created the crescent and jiggler squeakers for different sounds.

She checked out just fine! Since Carmen survived the photoshoot, I gave the second one to Alice’s dog, Darla, who was quite distraught that we didn’t pick her as our model.

Liam, the llama, is my favorite, and Theo was excited to check him out as well.

We also both love Avocado.

I bought a Zippy Burrow (the Piñata toy) on a whim,  as we’ve never had a burrowing toy, and frankly, I didn’t think my dogs would like it.   Much to my surprise, Theo adores it.  After the photoshoot, Theo claimed the Piñata and the candies as his new number one toy.  He carries them from room to room and naps with them too. The candies have squeakers, but the Piñata does not.

After a month of having daily access to both Carmen the Cactus and the Piñata toy, I can highly recommend them to dogs who play gently to moderately with their toys.  Even though Theo plays with the Piñata toy every single day,  it still looks brand new.  Carmen no longer squeaks, but her squeaker lasted longer than most of the toys we get.

The Sugar Skull toy is extra tough.  He doesn’t have any stuffing, which means less cleanup IF Theo can tear into him.

If I saw ZippyPaws Storybook toys in a store, I would think they were designed for toddlers.  They are so cute and cuddly.  I guess dogs really are the new kids!
