From Jennifer:  “The love for our dogs is unconditional. We should celebrate dogs often.”

From Linda:  “I adopted Mama about five years ago from my nephew. He was in the military and serving overseas. I would take care of her when he was gone, and she and I developed an instant bond. When my nephew was going overseas with his wife at the time, she also had dogs. Unfortunately, their dogs did not get along. I was thrilled when my nephew asked if I wanted her, and naturally, I jumped at the chance.

Mama and I went everywhere together. She loved the beach and walking in the woods. My husband and I would take her out to dinner with us (outdoor seating, of course); she was a huge hit. People would walk out of their way to say hi and give her loves, and Mama loved people. She loved all the attention. I would let her run off lead, and Mama would never go farther than 15-25 feet from me and always check to see where I was. She loved riding in my jeep with the top and doors off, the wind in her face. Mama was a cancer survivor of five years.

Words can’t convey how loved she was. I tell people that Mama is my heart, and I miss her every day. I miss her smile. Mama used to ‘talk’ to me when I walked through the door after work. I would put my things down, sit on the couch and listen to her telling me about her day. I would say hi to her and listen to her before I said hi to my husband. She will always be in my heart and soul.”

From Natalie:  “Lauren contacted me because her dog had just been diagnosed with cancer.  Shea didn’t have much time left. We got her scheduled asap and had a wonderful session. Two weeks after the session, when she came to pick out her images, Lauren let me know that their sweet girl had passed.”

From Lauren:  “We rescued Shea (Shea Darling) in 2013. Shea moved from New York to Colorado with us in 2014 and became a ‘working’ dog, but not like a traditional Kelpie- she went to work every day with me (her Mom), at an office, for two years. She was the ‘receptionist/greeter’ at work, and loved hiking, swimming and chasing/herding any animals she came across when we weren’t indoors. Shea became a ‘big sister’ to her human sister in 2017.  She embraced it even if that meant sharing the toys that she hoarded. Shea never passed up a scoop of peanut butter, pizza crust, or ice cream and loved a good butt rub.

Shea passed in August; 10 weeks after she was diagnosed with Lymphoma. We are forever changed from her, and her resilience to the very end. She truly rescued us and showed us the meaning of family.”

Regardless of how much time you have with a loved one, it never seems long enough.  It seems especially true for dogs.  Their lives are unfairly short, but they seem to live them to the fullest. Even at age 13, Harry, the Chinese-crested mix, had a twinkle in his eye.   Nashville pet photographer, Mandy Whitley, captured so much of Harry’s personality in this senior dog photo session.

From Mandy: “Harry was 13 years old when these photos were taken.  He was a Chinese Crested mix of who knows just what exactly…..(mini schnauzer, terrier, Chinese crested…and the list could go on). This handsome guy got his name from a book from the ’50s called Harry the Dirty Dog. It is about a mischievous little fella who gets into lots of trouble, and it is a very fitting name for this pup.

He loved his hedgehog toy, sleeping in the bed with his people, and bird poop. He was not a fan of barbershop quartet singing, tuna, the mobile groomer, or his dad’s rancor star wars toy.

His mom, Kate, says that she loved the little twinkle in his eye most of all.

Harry was adopted from the Wilson County Animal Shelter. He actually crawled right into Kate’s purse as a tiny puppy, so of course, she had to take him home.

When I asked Kate what she loved about all his mixed breeds she said: ‘Everything! I love ALL of them. Ha! I love his crazy hair (Chinese crested) to his sharp intelligence (terrier). He communicates. Harry has a sense of humor and he actually tries to tempt me with his toys. Right as I am about to grab his hedgehog he rips it away and runs down the hall. He definitely has a little devilish side (mini-schnauzer).’

From Kate: “Not to sound corny, but Harry was the best dog friend I’ve ever had. At times he seemed more human than dog. Harry was up for anything, a four-mile hike on the Devil’s Backbone, a ride down the Natchez Trace, or a lazy afternoon by the creek.

He just wanted to be with me.  Harry passed away on June 24th of 2019 after 13 years by my side, and he left an enormous void. I still miss his overly excited greetings after a long day of work, and the little kisses he would give the back of my leg. He slept in between my legs, much to my husband’s chagrin. Harry could talk, shake, and taunt you with his toys. He loved pumpkin, chicken, and bird poop! (He really loved bird poop!) Our nightly routine involved fluffing the sheets, while he growled and barked, and pretended to be upset. We did this every night.

At first, our house was very quiet without his presence. Now we have opened up our home and adopted two more pups. I am learning to enjoy a new set of companions and all of their idiosyncrasies; although, I still miss Harry!
