Recently Milk-Bone ® introduced a new product, Milk-Bone Brushing Chews™ that makes it easy to maintain oral health in dogs. I’m not one to brush my dogs’ teeth on a regular basis even though I know I should. So I was excited to receive free samples of the new Brushing Chews for my dogs. They loved the Brushing Chews so much that I couldn’t get them to pose for photos. Fearing that they would devour all of them before I got a decent shot, I packed the Milk-Bone® Brushing Chews™ up and went to my favorite photographer/sister Alice G Patterson. Her Pomeranian, Darla, did a fabulous job restraining herself for a while.
The first thing I wondered about these chews was how they differ from other products I give my dogs. They have a unique shape including 75-degree twist that is designed to help dogs maneuver the chew to clean down to the gum line, including hard-to-reach back teeth. Additionally, Milk-Bone Brushing Chews they are covered with nubs and ridges designed to clean like bristles on a toothbrush. Based on the shape and texture, I expected them to be easily pliable, but that wasn’t the case.
Theo, a very fast and aggressive chewer, takes several minutes to chew his, meaning the brushing chew is cleaning his teeth better than something he wolfs down in 3 seconds flat.
From Milk-Bone: “When fed daily Milk-BoneBrushing Chews are clinically proven to be as effective as brushing a dog’s teeth twice per week based on the reduction of tartar build-up and bad breath. Milk-Bone Brushing Chews are so effective that they have earned the trusted Veterinary Oral Health Council’s (VOHC) Seal of Acceptance, the pet industry’s equivalent of the American Dental Association (ADA), for preventing tartar buildup.”
80% of dogs have periodontal disease by age 3. Treating periodontal disease often involves anesthesia which can be risky and expensive.
In order to keep my dogs’ teeth healthy, I can either brush their teeth twice a week or feed them this treat every day. Milk Bone Brushing Chews are available in three sizes: mini, small/medium and large. We used the small/medium sized ones for this photo shoot, because Theo, Nelly and Sophie MAY have eaten all the minis…
The drawback to these is they have a strong fragrance, which makes it harder to hide them from my dogs, even in the resealable plastic bag. (However, I can’t smell them when they are in the bag.)
